Iranian Sensibility

Just when I was getting my knickers in a twist over the Iranian hostage situation, Iran does a double-take and decides to release the British captives.

Guardian article on the event.

I always figured they would. There was no real good reason to do anything else, but plenty of reason to take your time and make a show of it. It was merely a power play to show the world, and perhaps more importantly, the Iranian people, that the Iranian government needs to be taken seriously on the world stage.

And even more so, it makes a very strong statement about diplomacy. What would have happened if this had been US soldiers captured? Bushie McTriggerhappy would have nuked Tehran. But England engaged in diplomatic talks, treated Iran like a equal partner on the world stage, and Iran cooperated. It’s a slap in the face to the snobby and dismissive foreign policy that is BushCo’s modus operandi.

Anyway, sounds like a good move on Iran’s part all the way around.

BTW- here’s an interesting take on what my real fear about this whole situation was- that the hawkish neocon fucks in DC would use this as a means to jump in militarily, something they are just itching to do.

Man, Newt Gingrich is a frickin’ moron.
