It’s Draw Muhammad Day

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

Stylized icon of Muhammed using crescent moons and starsRejoice in the western world’s glory, oh unenlightened ones.  As the west has embraced (led by the British Empire and the United States) the ideal of Freedom of Speech! This is an uncompromising view, that the human species should be able to say anything, to express themselves in any way, whether that offends someone or not.  It is the cornerstone of the very concept of liberty.

It is unfortunate that Molly Norris, a Seattle cartoonist, has felt the need to distance herself from her own viral creation, but when a good idea catches hold of the imagination, personal comfort often flies off with it.

In this case, it came in the form of a cartoon she drew, proclaiming May 20th as “Everybody Draw Mohammed Day”.  It took off like wildfire.

South Park's depiction of Muhammad

And why wouldn’t it?  The very idea that the “religion of peace”, as Islam claims it is, would even threaten to kill people for creating images of their prophet, spits in the face of liberty!  As we in the west hold freedom of speech as dear to our hearts as the Muslim people hold their prophet – you’re asking for a fight.

Search engines will certainly lead you to many depictions of the Islamic prophet, but zombietime.com has the most extensive collection I could find.  Check them out.

Pat Olifphant's Israel-Gaza cartoon

Therawstory.com has a brief article on Pat Oliphant’s recent Israel-Gaza political cartoon.  This cartoon in turn inspired Abraham Foxman, National Director of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) to blow a Semitic gasket.  Foxman released the following statement:

“Pat Oliphant’s outlandish and offensive use of the Star of David in combination with Nazi-like imagery is hideously anti-Semitic.  It employs Nazi imagery by portraying Israel as a jack-booted, goose-stepping headless apparition.  The implication is of an Israeli policy without a head or a heart.”

First of all, when you put the Star of David on your national flag, it’s going to be used in satire.  Sorry. Secondly, Isreali and Jewish are not the same thing, no matter how much you’d love people to believe so,  in order to stifle criticism of Isreali policy by accusations of racism.  Finally, Isreali policy toward the Gaza strip has been without head or heart.  It’s starting to smell like genocide.

If Mr. Foxman would only reach upward, gripping his buttocks firmly and pushing as hard as he can, he would eventually hear a popping noise, followed by the clear vision to see just how accurate this cartoon’s underlying message really is.

For Pony

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

The World of Warcraft clans are probably well aware of this site, but it was my youngest who pointed it out to me. He knows I’m a fan of comic and anime art, and an old D&D player, so the theme of the comic would fit into my interests.

There are a handful of somewhat stereotypical characters, in a somewhat stereotypical plot at times. For me, it’s the noble, honest and good hearted efforts of the character named Richard, which appeals the most. After all, anyone who dedicates their ambitions for the honor of ponies is hard to dislike. Plus, he has a way with children.

Check out Looking for Group if you have some time and a few trolls to kill.

PAWN

Every once in a while you find an artist out there who actually seems to have some talent. Fredrik K.T. Anderssson fits that bill in my book.

If you have a little time, wander over to the PAWN Site.
