A Puppy’s Fate

Tuesday, March 4th, 2008

There has been a general outrage over the last couple of days, over a video showing a US Marine throwing a puppy off a cliff, somewhere presumably in the Middle East.

At least one veterinarian has come out with the belief that the video shows a real animal being hurled.

“If this is something legitimate, it’s one of the most egregious acts of animal cruelty I have ever seen, if not the most,” said Dr. Matt Mickas, chief of Community Practice Services at WSU’s veterinary college.

He said it did not appear fake to him, because of the way the animal went slack by being held from the neck.

“To me, the sound on the YouTube clip sounded like a puppy in distress — the same sound we hear when the puppies come into the hospital,” Mickas said.

The Marine Corp is looking into the video and hopefully their investigation will come up with some answers. In the meantime, real or fake, the video is producing quite an outcry from many.

My feelings are myriad. We take young men and women and throw them into a grinder, and some of these people are not very stable to begin with. Should we be shocked when they loose basic morality? How can the average person cope with the fact that they’re killing people all the time? If one is in a constant state of killing humans, how can we expect them to treat dogs any better? Yet, how can we be expected to turn a blind eye to such heinous actions, by using such rationalizations?

What it all boils down to is that killing other people is not a natural state for humans to commit effort to. Even once is Earth shaking. Multiple times, over years of service – I can’t see how that can’t scar one for life. As a society, we’re going to have to deal with these traumatized individuals returning home to try to lead a normal life.

That’s where my real worry resides. Someone who has been desensitized to death to such a level that animal life is something to extinguish as a joke, is not someone I want walking around on the streets – not without having had some serious therapy to help them recover from the Hell they’ve been living through. However, the military has not received proper funding for such psychological care to date. In short, we’re going to have a lot of traumatized soldiers returning home, without the mental tools needed to help them make the transition back to day to day civilian life.

If real, this video shows a young man who is willing to kill baby animals for a joke. It shows a mindset that is dangerous to everything around him. People are rightfully outraged when babies and animals are hurt, more than with adult humans – because they are essentially helpless. A mindset that allows someone to torture or kill helpless beings, is not a mindset any civilized society wants. Furthermore, it indicates a generally dangerous trend of thinking, that has more often than not been precursor to vile actions against other people, even people that the sociopath claims to love.

This soldier needs real help, not empty promises or a small military pension and a slap on the back. I fear he won’t get that help and consequently someone in his life back here at home, is going to follow that puppy’s fate. Our casualties in this war, like all wars before it, will not end when the war ends. The final toll may take decades after to determine.

Attack on Iran Starting?

Saturday, February 2nd, 2008

Three submarine Internet cables have been cut, leading to a massive outage of Internet connectivity in the Middle East, including the now known exaggerated complete cutoff of all Internet traffic to and from Iran.

One submarine cable being cut is an event for news. Three underwater cables cut within 72 hours of each other, all to the same region, but at different locations? Something is up and it doesn’t smell good. I have a very difficult time believing that this is coincidence.

The potential for this being a strategic, purposeful event to cut off communication with Iran cannot be overlooked. From a military perspective, this could be the sign of a coming attack against Iran.

Time will tell.

Addendum, Feb 2nd: It appears that Iran had partial bandwidth all along and India may be near 80% back by Monday. More here. Still no word as why three cables in two different areas were cut.

As a side note to this all, here is a fascinating article from back in 2001, talking about the NSA’s potential tapping of an undersea fiber run and just how much data transfer between continents is hinged on a few strands of fiber.

It is also interesting to note that Iran started its oil burse on Friday, no longer accepting the US dollar as trade currency. Exaggerated or not, this still smells fishy.

Another article on the incident here.

Truth Under Attack

Wednesday, January 9th, 2008

Back in early August, 1964, Democratic Republic of Vietnam naval forces attacked the USS Maddox and the USS Turner Joy. The first attack was on August 2nd against the USS Maddox, then August 4th against both vessels. President Lydon B. Johnson used the second attack to obtain approval from Congress for the Vietnam War.

The problem is, these two attacks never happened.

First came information in 2001, in the form of an audio tape recording by President Johnson himself, in which he admits that the second attack never happened. (This information was first revealed in Martin Fletcher’s article in the The Times, on Nov 7th, 2001.) Now, further information straight from the NSA shows us that none of the incident was real.

I bring this up, not only because it is fascinating news, but to put into perspective the current goals and “reactions” which will come from the Bush administration in their desire to attack Iran and Syria. The recent incident reported in the papers of our ships having a “close brush” with Iranian boats brings this issue to a head. I ask you to consider this simple question: Are you going to trust the government at face value when they say we were attacked?

This government has a long history of going to war under the pretext that we were innocent and attacked without provocation. From the sinking of the USS Maine by an explosion of unknown cause, which started the Spanish American war; through FDR’s goading of Japan and now argued topic of foreknowledge of the attack on Pearl Harbor; to the now proven faked attack in the Gulf of Tonkin. Why is it that we still trust the government when they claim we were attacked without provocation? It has a proven modus operandi which betrays any such trust!

It seems to me that the record of lying, on all areas of government behavior, would have produced a certain level of healthy skepticism in even the most ardent lapdog by now. It hasn’t. Instead the modus operandi of the American public is to trust the government’s take on every incident, the general assumption being that they would not mislead us.

They have misled us. They have misled us into sending our young men to the far corners of the world to die for fictional causes. It cannot all be swiped away with a gesture, claiming that it was an accident of circumstance or simple negligence or incompetence. We’ve been lied to and we are being lied to, all the time.

It seems to me that approaching anything the government claims with a heavy dose of skepticism, is the only sane course of response to have anymore. As difficult to swallow as it may be, it is long past the time to stop giving our own government the benefit of the doubt.

Donkey Dung

Back in March of 2007, I bemoaned on how the Democratic victory in congress meant nothing as far as stopping the Bush administrations atrocities. I asked what we’ve seen from the Democrats concerning Iraq, Iran and our loss of liberty from the current administration. The answer then is what I expected at the time: nothing.

I received some criticism for “not giving the Democrats enough time” and “expecting too much for such a short period”. It’s been a year now since the Democrats have held congress. Have my expectations been appeased?

Hardly.

Let’s review the workings of the Democratic Party controlled congress over 2007. The war in Iraq is still going strong. In fact the Senate unanimously confirmed General “I’ve never seen a surge I didn’t like” Petreaus. The Democrats haven’t forced a retreat, haven’t cut funding to the war effort, nor have they done anything about the horrid Guantanamo facility. FISA was renewed in full force, without any concern for civil liberties. Michael Mukasey was given a free ride on his nomination for Attorney General over his inability to decide whether or not waterboarding is torture. Finally, at the end of 2007, Bush was handed $70 billion in war funding, which means that the war will go on until at least the end of Bush’s term, as no one is going to rock the vote-boat at the end of this summer when the funding runs out – so more will be provided. Honorable mention must also be given to Speaker Nancy Pelosi, as news has now come out showing that when Pelosi was a senior member of the House Intelligence Committee, that the CIA informed the committee as early as 2002 that waterboarding and other torture techniques were being used. Far from objecting, it has been reported that Pelosi cheered on such tactics and supported the initiative to continue.

Even the Democratic Presidential candidates don’t meet the mark. Clinton and Obama battled against each other to prove how “anti-war” they were over Iraq, while their voting records reveal that both voted for a $301 billion increase in war spending and both voted against setting a withdrawal date. Chris Dodd likes to talks as if he supports liberty, being the only Democratic Presidential candidate with a stated “return to the Constitution” position, but his voting record betrays his totalitarian nature. No one who believes in liberty and the Constitution would vote for the PATRIOT Act, the FEMA Amendment, the Homeland Security Act of 2002, as well as the Implementing 9/11 Commission Recommendations Act. Congress should have just bundled them under the “Repealing the Bill of Rights Act” and saved time.

No, the Democrats have merely proven once again that they are ineffective in achieving their stated goals at best, or lie about their stated goals at nominal.

Republican and Democrat: Two sides to the same evil coin. Until Americans stop voting via partisan politics, we will continue down the same horrid path until the USA simply falls apart from its own seditious weight.

Rumblings of War and Things to Come

Wednesday, July 11th, 2007

Several sites out there are starting to talk about the interesting sound bites coming from the Reich-wing these days.

First in line are comments by the new chairman of the Arkansas Republican Party, Dennis Milligan.

“At the end of the day, I believe fully the president is doing the right thing, and I think all we need is some attacks on American soil like we had on [Sept. 11, 2001 ], and the naysayers will come around very quickly to appreciate not only the commitment for President Bush, but the sacrifice that has been made by men and women to protect this country.”

Shortly after, former Republican Senator Rick Santorum was recorded on the Hugh Hewitt radio show saying some rather prophetic things.

“Between now and November, a lot of things are going to happen, and I believe that by this time next year, the American public’s going to have a very different view of this war, and it will be because, I think, of some unfortunate events, that like we’re seeing unfold in the UK. But I think the American public’s going to have a very different view.”

Finally, we have the Homeland Security Secretary, pontificating on the nature of his bowels to the editorial board of the Chicago Tribune, stating that he has a “gut feeling” that new terrorist attacks may be underway this summer.

Earlier this month, ABC News reported that a secret US law enforcement report, prepared for the Department of Homeland Security (is it just me, or does that title make you want to goose-step?) warns that al-Qaeda is planning some sort of “terror spectacular” for this summer, relating the nature of the warnings as being an par with what was discovered before the 9-11 attack.

For a moment, lets take this information at face value and assume that there really is word on the intelligence grapevine that a new al-Qaeda attack is on the way. My question is a simple one: Why are these Republican shills using such information as an attempted bolstering point of a miserably failing President, instead of talking about, or even pushing for, steps needed to take to stop this coming attack? If Homeland Security (I’m goose-stepping now, I have to!) truly has solid information that something is going on, how is it that they don’t have enough information to nail these culprits? If a new attack on US soil is what it takes to make America appreciate and commit to President Bush, doesn’t that indicate how steeped in feces his current stance really is, motivating us to impeach him instead?

We have been lied to about 9-11. Three towers do not fall down into their own footprint, without it being done by controlled demolition. Jet fuel fires cannot burn hot enough to melt or even weaken steel, it’s half the needed temperature. The laws of physics do not bend or break for terrorists. This means, at the very least, that there is a lot more to the official story than meets the eye. Furthermore, with PNAC’s “Rebuilding America’s Defenses: Strategies, Forces, and Resources For a New Century” stating openly that a “new Pearl Harbor” was needed to support their goals, one has to get a little worried about what involvement the PNAC crowd had in the attack itself. Even if there is no connection to be found, they certainly used the opportunity to engage their plans.

So this new lineup of terrorist “booga booga!” doesn’t scare me into thinking that al-Qaeda is going to suitcase nuke the Salt Lake City LDS Temple, it scares me into thinking that our own government has planned, or is allowing to happen, a terrorist strike in the US, in order to secure a final choke-hold on power, centered entirely around the Executive office.

Bush has already signed the executive orders needed to take full control of the entire Federal government, legislative and judicial branches included. Little fanfare was raised by the press over this signing, but it was noticed in the Net. If we get another large terrorist attack, either real, faked or somewhere in the middle, Bush has set himself up to take full control of the United States, in an even more insidious and pre-planned fashion than Hitler had managed. We are at a very dangerous crux, with everything left to loose on the line with these new terrorist warnings.

For those who believe that it is impossible that our government would allow or fake a terrorist attack on US citizens, think again. Not only has the government proven in the past, with fallout tests, forced medical procedures and more, that they consider the US population expendable, but this kind of thinking has been documented before. It was called Operation Northwoods.

So, the big question in the end is, will the American Idle go along with fascist rule, or will they wake up and smell the manure that they’re up to their necks in?

Iranian Sensibility

Wednesday, April 4th, 2007

Just when I was getting my knickers in a twist over the Iranian hostage situation, Iran does a double-take and decides to release the British captives.

Guardian article on the event.
